A custom-made power supply, based on a 10.8V 1100mAh NiMH battery pack is installed to provide a low level of backup power when the main battery is disconnected. This could be when the security isolation key to the main battery is operated or when the battery is being charged or removed temporarily.
This Auxiliary Power Supply takes over the supply of power to the analogue clock and the 'standby' power feed to the stereo head unit ONLY. The former to keep time and the latter in order to retain all settings which are lost in the event of total power isolation e.g. Bluetooth, custom EQ, display, radio station memories, etc. Power can be supplied for over two weeks when fully charged. Charging is automatically accomplished when the main battery is connected.
The output voltage from this Auxiliary Power Supply is monitored on the main voltmeter beneath the dashboard by pressing the red button at the top.
The Auxiliary Power Supply circuit comprises three 3A 1N5820 Schottky diodes, a 3W 18 ohm resistor, a 3A 102 degree C thermal fuse (taped tightly to the body of the battery cells) and a separate 3A fast-acting cartridge fuse in a separate inline fuse holder.
The full circuit is recorded in the wiring diagram shown below.
